Can You Put Tin Foil in an Air Fryer? Check Your Model First

Guidance reviewed: 18 October 2026

Sometimes, but check your exact air fryer before using tin foil. Philips advises against it in the models covered by its support answer. Instant’s 3.8L manual allows only a particular position. Ninja’s AF500UK FAQ permits foil in the drawer. The useful question is therefore: does your model allow foil for this job, in this position and cooking mode?

This is a comparison of manufacturer guidance, not a claim that we have tested foil arrangements. Follow the instructions supplied with your appliance and resolve unclear or conflicting advice with its manufacturer.

Philips: a recommendation against foil

The Philips UK foil and baking-paper FAQ recommends against both. Its applicable-product listing includes HD9270/91R1; check the listing for your own full code.

Philips says covering the basket bottom reduces airflow and cooking performance, and lining the grease-collecting pan also disrupts airflow. It warns that material without food on it can be drawn towards the heating element and burn. That warning is not an instruction to make foil acceptable simply by putting food on top: the page’s overall recommendation remains against using it.

Instant 3.8L: the position matters

The Instant Air Fryer 3.8L UK manual, on printed page 2, distinguishes covering the basket from using foil only at its bottom. It warns that covering the basket can make the appliance overheat.

Keep both parts of that instruction together. It does not authorise lining the appliance’s cooking chamber, extending foil around the basket, or applying the rule to every Instant Vortex or multicooker. If you cannot identify the permitted position from your matching manual, ask Instant before using it.

Ninja AF500UK: permission is specific to the model

The live Ninja Ireland AF500UK FAQ permits aluminium foil in the air-fry drawer and notes its use in some recipes. This is the AF500UK model, listed by Ninja’s authorised Irish distributor.

The FAQ is not a diagram for every possible lining or wrapping arrangement. Use it alongside the AF500UK instruction booklet and the complete recipe. Do not extend that permission to a different Ninja appliance just because the brand matches.

Be precise about where the foil would go

“Put foil in the air fryer” can describe several different jobs: lining a cooking surface, wrapping food, covering a dish, or catching drips below it. An answer about one arrangement does not settle the others.

Before searching for advice, name the component using the manual’s parts diagram. Is it the removable basket, a crisper plate, a cooking tray, or the appliance cavity? Write down whether the foil would sit under food, around it or above it. This small distinction makes a support question much easier to answer accurately.

A photograph of a similar-looking drawer is not enough. Our Ninja Crispi versus drawer air fryer comparison shows why identifying the actual cooking format comes before copying someone else’s setup.

Four checks before you start

  1. Match the full model. Use the rating label and official support page. Keep regional suffixes and capacity versions; a shared product-family name is not a complete match.
  2. Match the cooking mode. Check the selected function, especially on a combination appliance. Do not carry a drawer-air-fryer permission into microwave operation. Our microwave and air fryer combination guide explains the distinction.
  3. Find an explicit instruction. Search the manual and official FAQ for foil, aluminium or aluminum. Read the surrounding warning, not only the sentence containing a yes.
  4. Match the proposed arrangement. Check the location and any recipe conditions. If the instructions do not answer your actual use, leave the foil out and ask the manufacturer rather than inventing a gap, hole pattern or securing method.

When asking support, provide the model, programme, food or dish, intended foil position and the manual page you found. A sketch or photograph taken with the appliance off can clarify the component you mean. Ask for the answer for that setup, not a general opinion about air fryers.

If your aim is easier cleaning or baking

Start with the model’s cleaning instructions and permitted cooking accessories. Do not assume foil is necessary, or that a baking-paper or silicone liner automatically inherits foil permission. Each material and arrangement needs its own approval.

For baking, check the intended tin, its fit and the appliance’s instructions before changing the lining method. Our air fryer baking guide covers those buying and fit questions. A recipe that uses a separate tin should not become a foil-lined drawer recipe simply because both fit inside the appliance.

Save the confirmed instruction with your model number. That gives you a useful reference for the next cook, while keeping the answer tied to the appliance and method it actually covers.
