Start with the job: replacing a fitted hob, or adding one portable cooking zone? This guide focuses on fit, pan compatibility and everyday use. For a side-by-side shortlist of built-in models, see our built-in induction hob buying guide.
Table of Contents
Built-in or portable: which type suits your kitchen?
- Replacing the main cooking surface: compare built-in hobs only after an installer has checked the worktop, cabinet and electrical requirements.
- Adding a cooking zone: a portable single-zone hob may be enough. It needs an appropriate place to stand and the clearances specified in its manual.
- Cooking several dishes together: consider the number and size of pans, rather than buying solely by the number of advertised zones.
Tefal Everyday Slim IH210840: a portable option to compare
Tefal lists this portable hob as 45mm thick, with a 2100W maximum power setting, six automatic functions and seven manual power levels. The manufacturer specifies induction pans with bases from 12cm to 26cm and lists a timer and pause function.
It is a relevant option for someone seeking an extra cooking zone rather than replacing a complete fitted hob. Check the supplied instructions for positioning, ventilation and electrical requirements. The pan’s base measurement matters; a wide rim does not establish compatibility.
Considering a built-in hob instead?
The Bosch PUE611BB5B provides four fixed cooking zones in a nominal 60cm built-in format. Bosch describes this exact model as Plug & Play. It still requires the correct worktop fit and installation clearances: it is not a portable countertop appliance. Use the model-specific documents when discussing suitability with your installer.

Measure before you compare prices
For a replacement built-in hob, record the existing model number and ask your installer to check the cut-out and usable space below the worktop. The external width alone cannot establish that another hob will fit. Check any oven or drawer underneath against the new appliance’s installation drawing.
For a portable hob, measure the usable counter area and allow the clearance set out in its manual. Think about where it will be stored after use and whether the cable can reach a suitable socket without crossing a walkway or cooking area. Follow the appliance instructions rather than improvising an installation.
Which pans will work?
Check for an induction-compatible base and the manufacturer’s instructions. A magnetic base is necessary, and its size must suit the cooking zone. Some stainless-steel pans are suitable; others are not. Aluminium or copper cookware can work only where the construction includes a suitable induction base. Bosch’s pan guide explains the materials and why matching the base to the zone matters.
Check the pans you already own before buying a complete replacement set. For any new pan, verify the model’s induction compatibility and base diameter rather than relying only on a marketplace title.
What changes when you cook on induction?
Heat is produced in compatible cookware. The surface can still become hot from contact with the pan, so treat the cooking area as hot after use and follow the residual-heat display. See Bosch’s explanation of residual heat. A child lock does not replace supervision.
Use the controls and care instructions for your particular model. Do not treat a boost setting or automatic programme as permission to leave cooking unattended. Let the appliance cool before cleaning, and use only the cleaning methods allowed in its manual.
Questions to settle before ordering
- Is this the exact UK model and plug or connection type you intended to buy?
- Does it accommodate the pans you normally use, including their base sizes?
- For a built-in model, has the fit and supply been checked by a qualified installer?
- What is included in the delivered price, and who handles installation, returns and warranty service?
- Is the Amazon result the named model, rather than a similar-looking alternative or accessory?
Do not choose on an unverified saving
We have not tested cooking speed, noise or energy consumption for these products. Running cost depends on the appliance, use and tariff. Compare the documented functions and overall purchase cost; a fixed claim that induction always costs less than gas would be misleading.
