Under-Sink Kitchen Organisers: Measuring Around Pipes and Shut-Off Valves

Removable under-sink baskets holding cloths, brushes and sponges clear of the pipework

An under-sink organiser has to fit around the plumbing already there. The cupboard’s overall width is therefore a poor starting point on its own. Map the clear pockets of space, the movement of the doors and the access needed to valves before deciding whether a caddy, shelf or pull-out is useful.

Make a simple obstruction map

With the cupboard clear enough to see, sketch the floor plan and mark the position of pipes, trap, hoses and other fittings. Add a front view showing their heights. You do not need an architectural drawing; you need enough information to avoid choosing a solid shelf that occupies the same space as the plumbing.

Record which fittings need access and leave that route clear. If you are unsure what a valve or connection does, identify it through the appropriate appliance, plumbing or property information rather than moving it to make an organiser fit.

Measure the opening and the travel path

Account for door hinges, a centre post and any lip at the cupboard base. A pull-out or wheeled caddy needs room to travel through the opening as well as somewhere to sit. Check the path with a paper template before buying.

Joseph Joseph’s two-tier CupboardStore caddy, for example, is listed at 33.5 cm high, 20 cm wide and 47 cm deep, with wheels and pull handles. Its published footprint is only the beginning of the fit check; the cupboard must also accommodate the retrieval movement.

Choose storage by the available pocket

A narrow tall space may suit one type of organiser, while a low clear space beneath part of the sink may suit another. Avoid trying to fill every gap. Some empty space is useful for inspection and for removing a container without catching a hose or fitting.

Use removable storage where it makes cleaning and access easier. If a fitted pull-out requires screws or other installation, follow its instructions and establish that the cupboard and surrounding services permit the work. Do not treat an attractive product photograph as an installation plan for your kitchen.

Keep the contents identifiable

The NHS poisoning-prevention advice recommends keeping household chemicals in their original containers. Store cleaning products according to their labels and keep their identity visible. A basket can group compatible supplies, but it should not encourage transferring chemicals into anonymous decorative bottles. Keep food and food-contact equipment in appropriate separate storage rather than using every available under-sink gap indiscriminately.

Choose a grouping that can be lifted or moved comfortably with its normal contents. A large caddy becomes less convenient if it is filled beyond what you can manage, even before any manufacturer load limit is considered.

Check the cleaning and inspection routine

Area Planning question
Pipework Can it remain visible and accessible?
Valves Can the required control be reached promptly?
Door opening Will the organiser travel past hinges and posts?
Cupboard base Can storage be removed for inspection and cleaning?

Follow the organiser’s cleaning instructions and check the cupboard condition while it is empty. If you find unexplained dampness or a suspected leak, address that issue before hiding the area behind more storage. An organiser is not a repair for damaged cabinetry or plumbing.

For example, a cupboard with a central waste trap may have two separate clear areas rather than one usable rectangle. Measure those pockets individually and consider two removable groups instead of one wide organiser. Check what happens when each is pulled forward: a bottle may clear the pipe while stored but catch it during removal. Mapping the travel path is especially useful when a tall item sits below a sloping hose or beside a projecting valve.

Choose the arrangement that preserves access

Our kitchen sink guide provides wider sink context. Beneath the sink, the useful outcome is a manageable group of supplies that can be retrieved and removed without interfering with the fittings. Buy around the clear space you actually have, leaving the plumbing’s access needs intact.
